U.K. Law Firm Establishes Specialized Team to Pursue Legal Action Against Anonymous Online Commenters

The Birmingham Post notes a new effort by a U.K. firm targeting legal action against anonymous online statements.

Birmingham’s largest law firm has launched a new team to track down people who make anonymous comments about companies online. The Cyber Tracing team at Wragge & Co was set up to deal with what the law firm said was a rising problem with people making anonymous statements that defamed companies, and people sharing confidential information online. And Wragge boasted the new team would ensure there was “nowhere to hide in cyberspace”.

Predictably, some of the internet’s denizens have interpreted this to be the throwing down of the gauntlet and responded in kind. Note the provocative nature of the anonymous comments in this Boing Boing post commenting on the news release. Perhaps the new Wragge and Co. team’s first client will be the firm itself?
